Toronto’s Premier Carnatic Flute Academy

Venugana Nathavarithi

Late Sri Suntharam Selvanayagam

Venugānālayam is a Toronto based music academy dedicated to providing meticulous training in Carnatic music on the bamboo flute to students across Canada and overseas. Founded in 1996 by Dr. Thayaparan Selvanayagam, Venugānālayam is rooted in a rich musical lineage that spans over several decades.

The origins of Venugānālayam can be traced to Late Sri Suntharam Selvanayagam of Nallur, Sri Lanka, a highly respected flautist, guru, and the father of Dr. Thayaparan. An eminent bamboo flute artist in Sri Lanka, Late Sri Suntharam Selvanayagam, laid the foundation for a disciplined, traditional, and deeply expressive approach to Carnatic flute music. Venugānālayam continues to uphold and transmit its teaching methodology, stylistic purity, and artistic tradition in its present-day training.

Venugānālayam received widespread commendation for conducting Canada’s premier Flute Arangetram in 2005. Since then, the institution has been exclusively recognized and honoured for rigorous training and staging of all Flute Arangetrams conducted in Canada to date, marking a significant contribution to the preservation and growth of Carnatic flute tradition in the diaspora.
